Wigan Athletic are a Championship side based in Lancashire in the North-East of England. Known as the Latics, they play their home matches at the DW Stadium. Their traditional kit is blue shirts with white sleeves, and blue shorts.
Founded in 1932, they spent much years in non-league football, and were first elected to the Football League in 1978. They then enjoyed a series of promotions, eventually reaching the Premier League in 2005, where they managed to survive for eight seasons, despite having one of the smallest budgets and squads.
In 2013, they achieve the greatest win in their history, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. Rank underdogs going into the final, a late header from Ben Watson was enough for them to secure the cup. They reached the FA Cup semi-final again the following year, but lost to Arsenal on penalties.
Since dropping out of the Premier League, Wigan have enjoyed something of a yo-yo existence, dropping out of the Championship into League One twice, only to bounce straight back every time.
Given their limited financial resources, Wigan predictions for last year’s League One winners back in the Championship were that they would struggle to survive, and so it has proved. They are in the thick of the relegation battle, with a points and goal difference advantage over the teams below. One Wigan betting tip for the rest of the season is that they will just have enough to stay up.
However, next campaign is likely to be just as tough. An early Wigan tip for the 2019 -2020 season is to expect them battling to survive in the Championship.
