Mainz 05 are a Bundesliga side based in the Rhineland-Palatinate. Nicknamed Die Nullfünfer they play their home games at the Opel Arena. Their traditional kit is red shirts and white shorts.
Founded in 1905, the club spent much of its history playing amateur football in the German lower leagues. It would be 2004 when they reached the Bundesliga for the first time, and stayed for three seasons before they were relegated back to the Bundesliga 2. Two seasons later they regained their status, and have remained a top flight club ever since. They have never won the German championship. Their best place finish came in the 2010 – 2011 season when they finished fifth.
The club’s main local rivals are Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Kaiserslauten (currently playing in the third tier of German football).
Because the city of Mainz is one of the cities in Germany most associated with carnival, the “Narrhallamarsch” sounds in the stadium every time they score a goal.
Jürgen Klopp spent almost his entire playing career with Mainz, making 345 appearances for them, and scoring 56 goals. When he retired as a player, followed as manager there and spent seven seasons in charge before moving to Borussia Dortmund.
