Bristol City are a Championship club based in the West of England. They play their home games at Ashton Gate, and their traditional kit is red shirts with white shorts.
Founded in 1894, they joined the Football League in 1901, and within six years, were playing in the top tier. They were relegated, however, in 1911, however, and it would be another 66 years before they played at the top level again, the intervening period filled with visits down to the old Third Division South, and back to the Second Division.
They reach the First Division again in 1976, enjoying a four-year stay during which they achieved their first 13th place. City then endured three successive relegations down to the Fourth Division before clawing their way back again, regaining their First Division status in 1992. Another 13th place ensued before relegation again. Their stay that time was less than a year, and they have not competed at the highest level since.
Their traditional rivals are Bristol Rovers, but it has been some years since they’ve been in the same league. There other rivals are Cardiff City; because the latter are based in Wales it is one of the few international derbies in the UK.
This is City’s fourth season back in the Championship after promotion from League One in 2015.
