Bayer Leverkusen are a Bundesliga side based in the North Rhine Westphalia region of Germany. Nicknamed Die Werkself, they play their home games at the BayArena. Their traditional kit is black shirts with a red vertical stripe, and black shorts.
Formed in 1904 by employees of the German pharmaceutical company Bayer, who are based in the industrial city of Leverkusen. The continued association with their corporate sponsors have led to accusations from supporters of other teams that they are a “plastic club” with no identity or traditions of their own.
For much of the early years of their existence, Leverkusen played lower tier and regional football, and it was not until 1979 that the played in the Bundesliga for the first time. They won their first major trophy, the UEFA Cup in 1988, and in 1993, when they won the German cup.
They have never won the Bundesliga, but have been second on five occasions. In 2002 they endured heartache on a massive scale, as they finished runners-up in three competitions. Known as the “Treble Horror” season, they lost the Bundesliga on the last day of the season to Borussia Dortmund. Also beaten in the German cup final by Schalke 04, and then went down in the Champions League final to Real Madrid in Glasgow.
Their main local rivals are FC Köln who currently play in Bundesliga 2. A safe Bayer Leverkusen prediction for next season is that we will see the rivalry renewed on the pitch.
In terms of Bayer Leverkusen betting tips for this season, a mid-table finish appears likely. That may mean summer departures from the team. Bayer Leverkusen tips for the next campaign could see them start without some of their brightest current stars like Julian Brandt and Leon Bailey.
