Atletico Madrid (Los Colchoneros) play their home games at the Wanda Metroolitano Stadium, hosting the 2019 Champions League Final. Their traditional home kit is red and white striped shirts, and blue shorts.
Founded in 1903 by three Basque students who wanted to model it on the club they supported Athletic Bilbao. Both teams ended up playing in red and white stripes, because after failing to find Blackburn Rovers kits to buy on a trip to England, officials from both clubs instead settled on the shirts worn by Southampton.
Atletico are one of the most successful Spanish clubs of all time. They have won the league title ten times, and finished runners up on a further nine occasions. Similarly they have lifted the Copa del Rey then times, and beaten finalists another nine times.
In Europe, they won the UEFA Winners Cup in 1962, and have been three times winner of the Europa League.
They have also three times been beaten Champions League finalists, with two of those defeats coming from Real Madrid.
In recent years, Atletico have been the only club in Spain able to challenge the domestic dominance of Real Madrid and Barcelona. And in manager Diego Someone they have one of the most respected coaches in Europe in charge.
This season, with Real in transition, optimistic Atletico Madrid predictions had them mounting a serious challenge for the title. Yet, in truth, their season has been disappointing. Meanwhile they are out of the Copa del Rey and the first leg lead against Juventus in the Champions League. And, with Barcelona already champions, a certain Atletico Madrid betting tip is that they will finish runners-up.
And with Real set to spend big this summer, an Atletico Madrid tip for next season is to expect them to finish third.
